Thanksgiving 2015

Thanksgiving 2015 is in the books! I can't believe it!? My sweet husband and I had the best time of just relaxing, being with family, playing lots of games, and eating way too much food. We love going home for the holidays but it's exciting to come back to our new home where in just a few (3!!) short months, we will be welcoming home our sweet baby! I'm currently snuggled up on the couch with the pup in furry socks and a chunky sweater enjoying the Christmas lights + sweet smells of cinnamon drifting through the house. I sure do love the holidays.
This year, I didn't take many photos. Normally, I'm capturing everything but I just wanted to relax since this photography season has been so crazy busy (so thankful!). It was good to just unplug from social media and reconnect with family.
Before heading to our family's houses, we started the break off in the best way. My husband treated me to a home-cooked meal at home (he's a great chef) along with the sweetest bunch of hand-picked flowers and we put up the Christmas tree! It was the best night. I am so thankful for him!
Then, we started things off at Joe's parents house complete with late nights playing farkle, the best company, and yummy food. One of my favorite parts was before eating, we all went around and shared what we were thankful for. So many thanks to God, the giver of every good gift. And a thankful heart for "toys, the ocean, and flowers" from Trevor, Joe's sweet 3 year old nephew.
Then we went to my parent's house to enjoy thanksgiving dinner #2. Our little girl (27 wks preggo) is growing and kicking like crazy! I think she loved the yummy thanksgiving dinners and leftovers the next day. We set up our Mema Debbie's Christmas tree for her and decorated with her which was so special then my brother and I put up my mom's tree and reminisced on our childhood with the 100s of handmade ornaments. It was a blast.
(Penny resting her head on the bump.. she's gonna be the best big sister)
A lot of people complain about the black Friday sales beginning on thanksgiving evening because it takes away from family time but honestly, I have the best and most hilarious time with my family then. It's a tradition where me, my husband, mom, and siblings get ready and brace the crowds and normally just people-watch. We always get Mc D's hot cocoa and normally, we end up seeing TONS of people we know out and about since it's a very small town. We ended up running into my grandma, aunt, and three sisters (on my dad's side) and that is always so fun! It's a tradition I hope to continue because it's always just plain fun. My stepdad isn't a shopper at all so he can be our official babysitter for those late night shopping trips!
We ended the thanksgiving break back at home, over at a friend's house playing games and sipping hot apple cider. I love the holidays!
Today marks the beginning of Advent, I believe. I'm excited to participate in Sara's Advent Illustrated bible journaling time. Go check it out on facebook! And while you're there, don't forget to "like" Hot Tea and the Empty Seat to get a sneak peek of each advent journaling day and also to stay updated on all the new changes coming to this space!
You are loved!

Cultivating a Heart of Thanks This Year

Happy Thanksgiving week, friend! I seriously love the holidays. What is better than food + family? Nothing in my book! Today, I'm linking up with sweet Kiki with The Circle, sharing what is on my thankful heart this year!

Testimonies. I'm so thankful that God has given me a story to share with the world. A story of His amazing love and mercy to me. I love hearing other's testimonies of God's goodness. I'm realizing that I'm just a tiny, microscopic part of His big story and I am thankful that God cared enough to redeemed my little story and has given me the opportunity through this blog and in real life to share it.

Holidays. I don't know what it is but when Thanksgiving and Christmas roll around, I just get so happy! Almost all of my greatest childhood memories took place during some sort of holiday so I think they will just always hold a special place in my heart! They help me realize that celebrating Jesus is a life-long thing, not just a yearly thing. And the family and food makes it that much sweeter!

A Healthy Baby + Body. I can't even explain how thankful I am that God has blessed us with a healthy growing baby inside of me. I'm always feeling her kick and move around and hit and dance in my belly. It makes me tear up thinking about it and how I don't deserve such a miracle. Because of fear and lack of trust in God and just a sinful heart, I always worried that my body wouldn't be able to care for another life but God is not hindered by anything. He makes anything possible. He is the God of miracles. And through this pregnancy, my trust in Him has grown more than I ever thought it could. And we can't wait to see our sweet girl in three months. I am so thankful. So, so thankful. God is worthy!

Newness. I just love that God created the idea of "new". He created new mornings and new days and new life. He created that awesome feeling of starting over new. I really think that that is His mercy to us. He knows that we mess up and sometimes need to start over, to start new. I am so thankful for each new day, an opportunity to glorify Him. I am thankful for new life. New beginnings. New years!

Kindness of strangers. I don't think of it as much as I should but you know how encouraging it is when a stranger does something kind for you? Whether it's paying for your coffee or taking the time out of their day to talk to you or compliment you... I want to be that kind of person!

Family. Oh, I am so thankful for my family... our relatives, our church family, and our friends. Each one is so special and brings an aspect of care and love into our lives. Last week, my mom and grandma along with my brother and sister came down to help us with our house. We were transitioning the office into a nursery for the baby and they went above and beyond. It looks like a new home! I was overwhelmed with thankfulness. My heart still bursts at the seams thinking of how God has graciously given us the gift of family.

Ultimate Sacrifice. This term "ultimate sacrifice" has been on my heart lately. In church, we have been going through the Old Testament and learning about how everything points to Jesus Christ... how the sacrifices made in the Old Testament were simply pictures of the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. My heart erupts with gratitude and wonder. God has been showing me that Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice and that because of this ultimate sacrifice which covers me, I have the opportunity and freedom to come to God the Father spotless and confident as a CHILD of God. Wow.

Life with my husband! I seriously could go on and on and on for days about how amazing my husband is. Seriously, I hit the jackpot. I think often about how just awesome God made him and continues to make him. He honestly LOVES and ADORES and SEEKS after Jesus and it's amazing. He cares for me soooo much to the point where I just want to cry almost everyday (okay, that's probably the pregnancy hormones). Tonight, he is making me dinner and helping me put ornaments on the tree. I think he is an angel in disguise. Thank you Jesus for my husband!
What are you thankful for this year? Making lists or being intentional to think of what you are thankful for seriously does wonders for your heart. I realize how good God really is! Tell me in the comments below all that you are thankful for!

Keeping God First in Your Marriage

My husband and I have been married for almost two years and while we are definitely no experts at this crazy adventure called marriage, God has definitely revealed Himself to us in mighty ways.

“God created marriage. No government subcommittee envisioned it. No social organization developed it. Marriage was conceived and born in the mind of God.”
 Max Lucado

I’m head over heels in love with my husband and at times, it’s hard for me to put God in front of my husband or daily life, for that matter. Sometimes, it’s easier or “more fun” to just chill on the couch or go to the movies together than getting up to read your Bibles together or to pray and seek God together. But it’s in those everyday choices that eventually bring you closer to God or pushes you away from God. We are learning that choosing God over everything, including each other, has great eternal and marital value.

Make Him Lord
Make sure that each one of you, you and your spouse, have an individual relationship with God and that your relationship with God is first in your own life. Thankfully, a relationship with Jesus is completely free, a gift. By simply believing that He is God, the one and only Savior and way to God and surrendering your life to Him daily, you can have a close relationship with your Creator! How amazing is that?

Seek Him
Pray and study the word together in each decision, big or small, and questions about anything like your future or ways to serve. Getting up early together before work or school to pray and read the Bible or doing that before bedtime will change your life and your marriage. It’s worth it! God is the true source of purpose and truth, remember that!

Depend on Him
Daily depend on Him for every need and desire. Trust Him. Rely on Him. By honestly doing this together and individually, God will become first in your marriage and life. By knowing that without Him we are helpless, we can run to Him and have confidence that He knows best.

Thank Him
Recognize that every good and perfect gift is from above and without Him, we cannot have success in life or in marriage. God is the creator of marriage. Thank Him for that! Thank God for your spouse and for the gift of marriage to your spouse. Having a thankful heart for God and all He does for us will cause a huge love for our Lord and Savior.

Point to Him
Encourage your spouse daily that God is for him and that God loves Him unconditionally. Pray for your husband everyday. Make it a point to ask your husband how you can pray for him. Pray for him when he is weak, confused, tired, seeking God, and serving other and God.

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word…” – Ephesians 5:22-23

Four Reasons Why I am Rebranding + Starting Fresh!

“I knew that I couldn’t keep blogging with heart unless I was proud of the space I was creating – it needed to be authentic, no ifs or buts."
 - Jody from Practicing Simplicity
Writing + blogging is one of my passions in life. I've always had dreams of being an author since I could remember. I've always loved to write, no matter what I'm writing about. I also love sharing what God is teaching me in my life which is why I started this blog 3+ years ago. I was sitting in my favorite coffee shop after my quiet time and decided.. I'm gonna start a blog! Since then, I've went from 2 readers (my mom and mom-in-law) to all of you! I've found awesome blogging groups and dear friends who I'm so grateful to know.
I love change and I think this blog is in great need of change with the design and the name and a few other things. I think that it's time to rebrand and start fresh.
Four Reasons I am Rebranding + Starting Fresh...
1. I want to grow.  Like I said earlier, I have dreams of being an author and I feel like this is my first step of faith into that dream! I haven't bought a blog domain name while being in this space on Blogger because I wasn't making any money on my blog but now I realize that it's okay to spend $9 a year in order to grow.
2. I want to be organized. Go big or go home, right? While I'm getting organized, I might as well change everything about my blog! Call me crazy but I'm excited!
3. I finally found my "niche".  My heart is fueled by encouragement and encouraging others. I want that to be the theme of this space. Whether it's about faith, marriage, life lessons, family stories and snapshots, I want the purpose to be to encourage. I want my blog to be easily understood just by reading the blog name. While Hot Tea and the Empty Seat is dear to my heart, it really doesn't tell the reader much about my blog or the heart behind it. Plus, it's so long! I think it's important to have a clear and easy to remember blog name. Oh, the things I'm learning!
4. I want this to be an inviting space. The design of a blog is major for me. If it's warm and inviting, I'll stay. If it's organized and clean and lovely, I'll follow. I just think there is so much to a blog design! It really tells a story along with your content. I don't want my readers spending five minutes trying to find a category or a post from last month. I want you to love coming here and come over more often... maybe even invite a friend or two.
I will be sharing our new blog name the day before the design is live on the blog! I'm so excited for this adventure and I hope it'll encourage you and help you in your own adventure!

Inspiration for Your Day!

HEY friend! It's a beautiful morning... and the first morning in a while that I've had coffee which probably has something to do with how chipper I am. I'm fueling up for a big work day here at our home. Project Nursery is in full swing starting today and OH MAN we have so much to do.
So, last week I launched "Cozy Spot Conversations" on our Facebook page. It's just a little spot where I hope to encourage you and inspire you throughout the week. I wanted to catch all of you up on the conversations so far! I hope it brings a little inspiration into your day!
Day 1
Today's Conversation Question: Is what you're doing today getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow?
Whether in it's your relationships (marriage, friendships, with God) or in your career or just in who you want to be as a person, are you moving forward and being intentional about thriving in what you care most about? In what ways can you make a practical step in starting to cultivate intention in your goals?
I'm so thankful that I don't have to do it all on my own. God is my strength and He can be your strength too to be the person He has designed you to be! That is so freeing!
Day 2
"For we live by faith, not by sight." 2 Cor. 5:7
Thursday's Conversation Question: Where is God calling you in your life to step out in faith? It may be to another job or to stay at your current one even though it may be He asking you to move to a new city or take a new deeper step in your relationship with Him... it may be reaching out to your neighbor or that friend in class... it could be anything. In what area do you need to step out in faith? What is holding you back from doing that today? For me, it's fear. Fear of the unknown or how someone might think of me. Rejection. But isn't it worth it.. to step out in faith for God despite the outcome?
God is calling us to be willing and obedient. He isn't calling us to be perfect. He just wants us to trust in and walk in faith in the One who is able!
Will you step out in faith today?
Day 3
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." Matthew 5:14
Fri-YAY's Conversation Question: Who is someone who has influenced your life for the better? How can you be an influential person to someone else in your life? God wants to use us to be a light in this darkened world... For His glory!
In high school before I followed Jesus, I went to youth group at church mainly because my precious mom worked at the church so I really didn't have an option. ...I had "better" things on my mind than following Jesus. But there was a leader there, Jenni, who befriended me and ended up disciplining me and showing me what a true follower of Christ looked like. She was gentle, encouraging, never harsh or condemning. At first, I thought she was just being nice because she had to but after many heart to hearts over coffee, I saw Jesus' bright Spirit in her. Eventually, I wanted to be just like her! You could see Christ at work in her heart and God used her to impact my life. Even though my goal is to look like Jesus and share His love and grace, I also want to be encouraging and meek to other girls who are seeking truth like Jenni was to me.
Who is the Jenni in your life and how can you make the step to being someone's encourager today?
Day 4
"But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity..."
 Hebrews 5:14-6:1
Monday's Conversation Question: In what area of your spiritual life do you need growth in? Christ is our strength and by His Holy Spirit, we grow more and more into His image. But sin can hinder that good work. Where do you see hindrance in your life? Where do you desire to grow?
Day 5
Today's discussion question looks a little different today..
Because sometimes we get caught up in believing that somehow we have to earn His love. (At least, I do!) But that isn't truth.
His love for us isn't based on what we can do for Him but because of what He did for us!
Thursday's Conversation Question: I've been studying through Matthew this week and I came across these words spoken by Jesus...
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21
His words are simple, plain, ...and obvious. Why is it so hard for us then to obey? Either our treasure is on earth or our treasure is in Heaven and we are the ones who decide! I've really had to ask God to direct my path and show me how to change where my heart and treasure lie because honestly, I am sad to say that I focus more on earthly treasures than gaining heavenly treasures. This world is not our home!

I encourage you to do the same!
which question inspired you today?

40 Prayers During Your Pregnancy- Part One

When Joe and I found out that God has blessed us with a tiny little life forming in me, we immediately started praying for that precious life. We believe passionately in the power of prayer. I want to start a little series sharing 10 prayers each day for the next four Tuesdays. At the end of the mini series, you will have 40 prayers.. enough for one prayer that you can meditate on each week of your pregnancy! I think it's so important to start covering our baby in prayer even now while she is still in the womb. God is good!

Week One: Thanksgiving
"Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him."
Psalm 95:2
Lord, I worship you. You are Creator and Sustainer. I thank you that you are our Rock and in You, we have a reason to sing. Jesus, thank you! Thank you for creating life inside of me. Thank you for your plans and your purposes that are always perfect. Lord, help me to see each life as precious, just as I already see this baby's life as precious growing inside of me. Forgive me when I don't see others lives as precious in Your sight and help me to encourage others to seek You for their purpose. Thank you, Jesus! Prepare our hearts for the future. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Week Two: Life
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth." Psalm 139:13-15

Lord, You are so amazing! You are the One and Only Creator and Great Artist. You form us in our mother's womb so personally and so intricately. Thank you that right now, You are forming this baby inside of me. You are forming it's inmost being, it's very soul that is being made to worship You, Father. Lord, I worship You that You hold all life in Your hands. Jesus, I pray that this baby will love You and serve You, that she will know that You created her wonderfully and fearfully. Create in me a love of life, Lord, because You treasure and love all life. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Week Three: Growth
"He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together." Colossians 1:17

Lord, you know all things and you hold all things. Please continue to keep this baby growing strong inside of me, Lord. Please give my body strength to provide for our unborn baby. Lord, grow in me a love just like Yours... a strong and selfless love. Jesus, You are so good to us. Please help my trust in You to grow as I travel this road of pregnancy. In Your Name, Amen.

Week Four: Sustenance
"And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

Father, You are the provider of every need. You don't have to bless us but You do because You love and delight in Your children, Your own. Lord, without You, we are nothing. Lord, without You, where does my help come from? Sustain us, Father, in need and in plenty. We rest in Your provision... provision for every need throughout this pregnancy. I trust you and I lay down my rights to try to do everything on my own. You are worthy. Amen.

Week Five: Peace
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

Oh beautiful Father, You are worthy. Your Word says that Your peace has the ability to guard us. So, Jesus, I am asking that You would guard my mind and my heart as they are so prone to wandering off into fear. Lord, sometimes I fear the unknown. There are so many things I am not in control of and I NEED Your peace that surpasses all understanding to flood my mind and wash away all fear and doubt. Protect my mind during this entire pregnancy, that no matter what happens, Your Spirit of peace will protect and hover over me. Thank you Jesus that You care so much about me! In Jesus Name, Amen.

Week Six: Trust

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding."
Proverbs 3:5

Lord, You are worthy and able to be trusted. But I am sinful and prone to trust in my own understanding. It's also easy to trust only in other people but Lord, help me to trust YOU, the Knower of all things. Jesus, when I don't know what to feel or say or do, help me to trust You. Help me to go to You when I am feeling all things in this pregnancy. Lord, I also pray that our baby will have a heart that trusts You from an early age. Jesus, You hold their hearts in your hands... mold it and shape it to be a lover of You. We trust that You are good and You are who You say You are! In Jesus Name, Amen.

Week Seven: Provision

Psalms 81:10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

Lord, You have redeemed me and saved me from death. You provided a way to Yourself through Jesus because You love us. Lord, I pray this truth over our baby, right now. That You would always provide for him/her. That You would be her God and she would be Your redeemed, washed pure, child. I pray that one day we will be singing Your praises together forever in Your presence. I pray that no matter what happens in life, that You would provide Your Spirit and Your Word to nourish her and keep her satisfied. You alone are able, God! I pray that she would know that from a young age. Lord, You have blessed me with Your presence. Help me to live a life that share Your presence with everyone around me, including my family. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Week Eight: Preparation

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

Lord, You are high above us. Your thoughts are infinitely more wise and so much higher than ours. Nothing catches you off guard. You never have to prepare for anything because You know all and time isn't relevant to You. Lord, give us wisdom. Give us wisdom for tomorrow. Give us wisdom and prepare our hearts for the future. You are creating another human and we have the responsibility to nurture and care for Your child so Lord, help us. Be with us every step of the way. Prepare our hearts now to be parents. Prepare my heart to be a mother. Be with us when we mess up and the nights are long and sleepless. Be with us when we are rejoicing. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Week Nine: Grace

"But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."" James 4:6

Lord, I humble myself before Your throne of grace. Lord, I confess that my heart is full of pride and sinfulness. Lord, I want to be always humble before Your throne. Father, teach me how to be more like You. As I study Your word, Jesus, help me become more humble of heart. So that I can freely accept the grace given to me by You and so that I can show grace to others, especially my family and my child. Lord, Your grace is enough. Let it be enough in my heart and teach me how to show grace every single day to those around me, especially this precious child You have given to me. Help me to see that he is a gift of grace straight from You, Lord! In Jesus Name, Amen.

Week Ten: Love
"If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing." 1 Corinthians 13:3
Jesus, You are love. You are perfect in all of Your ways. You love me so much that You are with me always. You loved this sinful world, in the middle of our sinfulness and rebellion, and You came to earth to save us. You gave Yourself away to be murdered and You died because You love us. You beat death and You rose from the grave because You love us and You provided a way to God! Thank you! Lord, I praise You! Father, You have already placed such a love within me for this child. THank you for that. Help me to remember and to live my life for one thing: to love You above all else. Help me to love you more. Father, give me the ability to love others more than I love myself. Help me to be more like Jesus was when He walked with man; He was love on display for all to see. Lord, when I don't feel like loving others, be my strength and my portion forever. Grow in me such a love for You and I pray that our baby and future babies will never once doubt Your love for them. Help me to be a mother who knows that no matter what I do, if I have not love, I have nothing. Help me to live a life that sings Your love. In Jesus Name, Amen.
See you next Tuesday for ten more prayers to pray during your pregnancy. YOU are loved!

4. It's full on scarf season!
I've been living in my blanket scarf lately. It's just so cozy. I'm loving this one and am on the lookout for it's twin that is much cheaper than it's $400 price tag ;)
